AWS Snowmobile Cheat Sheet
- Service Retirement: As of April 2024, AWS has retired the Snowmobile service. It is no longer available for order. Customers looking to migrate large datasets should consider AWS Snowball Edge for offline transfers or AWS DataSync for online transfers.
-
AWS Snowmobile was an exabyte-scale data transfer service used for migrating extremely large datasets to AWS.
-
The service involved a 45-foot ruggedized shipping container transported by a semi-trailer truck, capable of carrying up to 100 PB of data. Snowmobile was designed for massive migration, such as entire data centers, where traditional network transfers were impractical.
- Snowmobile uses multiple layers of security to help protect your data including dedicated security personnel:
- GPS tracking, alarm monitoring
- 24/7 video surveillance
- an optional escort security vehicle while in transit
-
All data was encrypted with 256-bit encryption keys you manage through the AWS Key Management Serviceand was designed for security and full chain-of-custody of your data.
- Snowmobile pricing was based on the amount of data stored on the truck per month.
