What is a “Prompt” in Prompt Engineering?

According to AWS documentation, a prompt typically consists of several components, which can influence the model’s response. These include:

  • Instruction: What the model should do or how it should behave. For example, “Summarize this text.”
  • Context: Background information or data that the model uses to generate a response. For instance, providing a passage of text for summarization.
  • Question: A specific inquiry that the model should answer. For example, “What is the capital of France?”
  • Examples: Providing examples helps guide the model toward the expected type of response, especially in few-shot or one-shot learning scenarios.

Types of Prompts

The structure and nature of a prompt can vary depending on the task at hand. Three commonly used types of prompts are Zero-Shot, Single-Shot, and Few-Shot. These types differ based on the amount of context or examples provided in the prompt, which influences how the model approaches and completes the task.

1. Zero-Shot Prompting

In Zero-Shot prompting, the model is given a task without examples or prior context. The model is expected to use its internal knowledge and understanding to complete the task based on the prompt alone. This is ideal for general-purpose tasks where the model has been pre-trained on a wide variety of data.

  • Example: “What is the capital of Japan?”

Since no additional context is provided, the model generates an answer based solely on its pre-existing knowledge.

2. Single-Shot Prompting

3. Few-Shot Prompting

Few-Shot prompting involves providing multiple examples to the model, which helps it recognize patterns or structures for more complex tasks. This approach is particularly useful for tasks requiring detailed context or nuanced understanding.

  • Example: “Translate the following sentences to Filipino:”
  • Examples Provided:
    • “English: ‘I love programming.’ → Filipino: ‘Mahilig ako sa programming.'”
    • “English: ‘It’s a beautiful day.’ → Filipino: ‘Magandang araw.'”
    • “English: ‘How do you do?’ → Filipino: ‘Kamusta ka?'”

By providing a few examples, the model is better equipped to generate accurate responses, as it can recognize the desired format and pattern.

Zero-Shot, Single-Shot, and Few-Shot in Practice

Each of these prompting strategies can be used effectively in different scenarios. Zero-Shot is ideal when you want the model to answer based on its general knowledge, while Single-Shot and Few-Shot are useful when the task requires more context or guidance.   3. Data Summarization: Designing prompts that guide the model to generate concise, informative summaries of larger texts.

4. Summarization – Summarization prompts ask the model to condense long passages into concise summaries, retaining the main points.
Example: “Summarize the following news article about the recent infrastructure projects in Metro Manila in one paragraph.”

5. Text Generation – These prompts guide the model to generate creative text, such as stories, poems, or dialogue.
Example: “Write a poem about a beautiful sunset in Palawan.”

6. Code Generation – Prompts can be used to request code generation for specific tasks, such as generating SQL queries or Python scripts.
Example: “Write a Python function to calculate the average rainfall in Manila for the past year.”

7. Mathematics – Prompts can describe math problems that require logical or numerical reasoning.
Example: “What is the total cost of 10 mangoes if each mango costs PHP 15?”

8. Reasoning/ Logical Thinking – This type of prompt requires the model to make logical deductions or answer complex questions by reasoning step-by-step.
Example: “If all Filipinos are citizens of the Philippines and Juan is Filipino, is Juan a citizen of the Philippines?”

9. Entity Extraction – Prompts can ask the model to extract specific pieces of information from text, such as names, dates, locations, etc.
Example: “Extract the date of the Philippine Independence Day from this passage.”

10. Chain-of-Thought Reasoning – In some tasks, prompts guide the model to break down the reasoning process step-by-step before delivering an answer.
Example: “Explain how to calculate the total income of a Filipino family of five based on an average monthly income of PHP 40,000 and expenses amounting to PHP 20,000.”
