Microsoft Copilot Prompts Cheat Sheet

A Copilot prompt is an instruction or question used to tell Microsoft Copilot what task to perform. Prompts guide the AI in creating, summarizing, analyzing, or editing information across Microsoft 365 apps, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.

Copilot works best when prompts clearly communicate the goal and, optionally, include context, expectations, and source data. The more relevant information included, the more accurate and useful the response becomes.

Copilot Prompt Framework

A well-structured prompt can include four parts.

Goal
What you want Copilot to do
“Write a summary of the Philippine Revolution.”
Context
Background information about the task
“The summary will be used for a high school history class.”
Expectations
Tone, format, or style
“Use simple language and bullet points.”
Source/Data
Files or documents to reference
“Use the attached article about the Katipunan.”

Example Prompt (Basic)

Write a summary of the Philippine Revolution of 1896.

Example Prompt (Detailed)

Draft an outline for a training module about the role of national heroes in Philippine independence movements. The audience is senior high school students studying Philippine history. Use a clear and educational tone and organize the outline into major historical periods.

How Copilot Uses Your Data

Copilot is powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) connected to Microsoft 365 apps and organizational data.
This allows Copilot to work with:
  • Documents

  • Emails

  • Presentations

  • Meeting transcripts

  • Reports

  • Internal knowledge bases

For example, a history teacher could use Copilot with stored materials like lecture notes, articles, or research papers.

Example prompt using stored documents:
Create a lecture outline about the Philippine Revolution based on the lecture notes and articles saved in this folder.
