What does it take to turn an idea into something real? At the September meetup of AWS User Group Philippines and Tutorials Dojo, four speakers explored the decisions, challenges, and technologies shaping the way we build. On September 24, AWS User Group Philippines and Tutorials Dojo, in partnership with Agora, brought the local tech community together at the AWS Office in BGC for BEYOND THE BUILD, an evening dedicated to the stories and lessons behind building technology. The meetup featured four perspectives on what it means to be a builder: knowing when to pivot, learning when to let go, evaluating AI before deployment, and making infrastructure workflows more reliable. From Programming Tutorials to AWS: The Story Behind Tutorials Dojo Alexandre Nevero shares the story behind Tutorials Dojo’s pivot from programming tutorials to AWS. What if the biggest breakthrough for your project isn’t building something new, but changing the direction of what you’ve already built? That question sits at the center of Alexandre Nevero’s talk, From Programming Tutorials to AWS: The Pivot That Changed Tutorials Dojo. Tutorials Dojo’s transition from programming tutorials to AWS-focused educational resources offers an opportunity to explore one of the more difficult decisions in building a business: recognizing when your original direction needs to change. Through the story he shared, the session examined the journey behind the pivot, the decisions that shaped Tutorials Dojo, and the lessons that other builders can take from its evolution. For founders, developers, and aspiring entrepreneurs, the story is a reminder to build your capabilities, recognize when to pivot, and turn opportunities into lasting growth. Nerry Vyncynt Carreon during his talk, Ship. Learn. Kill. Rebuild, highlighting that “Building is no longer a bottleneck.” If you’re a developer, then maybe you’ve been there. You spend weeks building something, only to discover that the feature you were so excited about doesn’t work the way you imagined. Do you fix it? Scrap it? Or start again? In Ship. Learn. Kill. Rebuild., Nerry Vyncynt Carreon tackled the realities of product development, where ideas are tested, assumptions are challenged, and iteration becomes part of the process. His session focused on the build-fail-iterate cycle and the decisions involved in determining whether a project needs improvement, a complete rebuild, or an entirely different approach. The broader lesson is one that applies well beyond software development: shipping is an opportunity to learn, not simply a finish line. Cyrus Mante introducing AI Agent Evaluation on AWS during his session. AI agents can automate workflows, interact with tools, and perform increasingly complex tasks. But a working demo doesn’t necessarily mean an application is ready for real-world use. How do you know whether an AI agent is producing accurate, reliable, and appropriate results? Cyrus Mante addressed this question in Ship With Confidence: An Intro to AI Agent Evaluations on AWS. His session introduced the importance of evaluating AI agents before production, connecting the excitement of building AI-powered applications with the equally important responsibility of testing them. For developers exploring agentic AI, evaluation is an important part of the development lifecycle, helping teams identify where an agent performs well and where it still needs improvement. Kier Atendido introduces XRD: defines what developers can request. Deploying infrastructure shouldn’t have to mean manually repeating the same steps across multiple environments. In Go Git It: Stop Clicking, Start Committing, Kier Atendido explored how GitOps can help teams automate infrastructure deployment and manage changes through version-controlled workflows. His session featured FluxCD, Crossplane, and Amazon EKS, introducing approaches to making infrastructure deployments more consistent, reproducible, and easier to track. For developers and cloud engineers, the discussion offered another perspective on building efficiently: improving not just the applications we create, but also the systems and processes that support them. Of course, the best conversations at a tech meetup don’t always happen onstage. They also happen between sessions, over shared experiences, and during conversations with someone who happens to be working on a similar problem. Builder Feature: Cuekoo Ivy Fedilo sharing her project, Cuekoo, during networking sessions. What if you could focus on the conversation instead of worrying about finding the right information during a meeting? We caught up with Ivy Fedilo, founder of Cuekoo, an AI meeting copilot designed to help you stay present by giving you the right cue at the right time. Through its knowledge base and customizable AI agents, Cuekoo provides relevant information and context during meetings, helping users stay focused, respond confidently, and access the information they need without losing track of the conversation. With Cuekoo preparing for its upcoming launch, Ivy gave us a glimpse of how AI can make meetings more productive without taking away from being present. Watch the whole interview here! From Tutorials Dojo’s pivotal change in direction to the practical challenges of AI evaluation and infrastructure deployment, Beyond the Build explored what happens when developers look beyond the code and consider the bigger picture. As the September meetup came to a close, the conversations, connections, and ideas offered attendees something to take into their next project. After all, building isn’t just about what you create. It’s also about what you learn, who you meet, and what you choose to do next.
